DESPITE the rain, thousands of people poured into Caledonian Road to take part in the annual Cally Festival.
It all started 13 years ago but has grown year on year to become one of the highlights of the Islington calendar, and Sunday’s event saw 3,000 more people attend than last year.

Ward councillor Paul Convery said: “Sunday was another brilliant Super-Cally-fragilistic festival. It’s the largest street festival in Islington and every year is better than the previous. We welcomed over 10,000 local people and visitors to the Cally. The festival perfectly demonstrates we’re a proud place and a community that’s pulling together.”

Among the acts on the main stage were the charismatic Dave Elvis alongside performers from the Britain’s Got Reggae competition and Rhythm Explorers, while the ever-popular Bus Stop Dancefloor, complete with a checkerboard floor, saw swathes of people getting down to DJ Victor Anderson and Winston the Geezer.

More than 70 local organisations took part in the festival which is organised and run by locals from the Cally area.

In the “calm zone” there were stalls encouraging children to take up running and poetry alongside pre-diabetes scans, while in the “discovery zone” kids unleashed their inner scientist with experiments run by the Institute of Physics.

Artbox London ran an “Artsy Block Party” while the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration – set to open next year in Clerkenwell – ran family illustration workshops. Young people who attend the Copenhagen Youth Project brought a fresh sound to the street party with the CYP Youth Stage.
