Islington residents support low-traffic measures
Friday, 20th October 2023
• IT is a shame to read opponents of low-traffic neighbourhoods subjected the last full council meeting to a ruckus, (LTN opponents are marched out of room, October 6).
Public consultations have shown time after time that Islington residents support low-traffic measures, and several London-wide polls by reputable pollsters have also shown strong support.
Moreover this support has been demonstrated at the ballot box: every seat in our borough at the last local elections was taken by parties which support LTNs.
Monitoring in Islington and elsewhere has shown that the boundary roads of LTNs do not usually experience an increase in motor traffic, pollution, or road danger, but all three have significantly reduced within the LTNs.
This clearly benefits residents of boundary roads as well, as they will very likely often travel through or spend time in their neighbouring LTNs.
Regarding protester Jackie Sheridan’s specific point about Canonbury Lane, it seems almost certain to me that traffic on that street will actually significantly reduce, as the Barnsbury/Laycock LN, liveable neighbourhood, proposals will cut off the existing east-west rat-run on the other side of Upper Street, with new filters planned for Islington Park Street and Barnsbury Street removing the source of that rat-running traffic.
Motor vehicles certainly have their place in our borough’s transport system, but it’s time that those who wish to see every street completely dominated by motor traffic realise that they are in the minority and start to engage more positively with the council’s efforts to make our streets safer and pleasanter.
