This proposed ‘liveable neighbourhood’ scheme should be rejected
Friday, 6th October 2023
• THE Barnsbury and Laycock so-called LN, liveable neighbourhood, proposals should be rejected. They are damaging environmentally and financially.
On the environment, vehicles will travel further to reach their destination resulting in traffic jams and greater pollution.
Once within a neighbourhood bounded by no through roads, vehicles will either have to reverse to exit or may be diverted down existing quiet streets.
The construction work required to deliver the proposals will add to Islington’s contribution to global warming.
And many of the benefits of the proposals in reducing pollution in some streets would come about in any case through increasing use of electric vehicles. So no need for intervention by the council.
The proposals will be costly and will impact on Islington’s budget at the expense of more urgent needs such as education and social care. And we, the taxpayers, will have to pay for these unnecessary works.
There will also be a loss of productivity locally and nationally through this and other low traffic schemes as residents and those making deliveries drive further and spend more time on essential journeys.
I write as a pedestrian, cyclist and user of public transport.
