Three 12-hour shifts make for a better working week
Friday, 14th April 2017
• IS Greg Foxsmith correct when he says people want to work nine to five (8am courts under attack from senior judge, April 7)?
A lot of people do work those hours in London but a lot of people also work flexible hours and shift systems and don’t mind it. Maybe Highbury Corner Magistrates’ court staff might like it if they give it a try.
On the subject of work impinging on time-limited lives, the Green Party has been derided for wanting to introduce four-day weeks but three-day weeks are already common in some industries – for example the BBC where news-gatherers etc often work 12-hour shifts. Do three of those in a row and one can then have four days off.
The problem of nine to five is preparing to go to work, the hassle of commuting and decompressing afterwards so that notionally eight-hour days easily become 14 hours plus.
It makes sense in so many ways to extend working days to 12 hours – one has already arrived at work prepared to work eight hours so one might as well stay on for 12.
I don’t know why more firms don’t offer that option instead of making us live tiring lives beholden to bosses.
