UK Disability History Month starts November 16
Friday, 21st October 2022
• THE Tribune quite rightly give a lot of space to Black History Month.
However, you barely gave any space to UK Disability History Month (UKDHM) last year.
The council were worse. They had an event for staff but we saw no public events, despite the councillor in charge of equalities having been told about it.
As with black history, disability history needs to be taught throughout the year. This year the month is from November 16 to December 16.
If interested in the launch (November 17 7pm) please email callumrussell@crconsultancy.org
My partner, Richard Rieser, invented UKDHM 12 years ago and it has now spread all over the country, so there are events in schools, colleges, unions, work places, councils. Each year there is a different theme and this year it is “Disability, Health and Well Being”.
The themes covered in other years have been: Learning the Lessons From Our History, Celebrating Our Struggle For Independent Living, War and Impairment, Moving Image Portrayal of Disability: Then and Now, Disability and Theatre, Disability and Language, Disability and Art, Disability and Music, Leadership, Resistance and Culture, Access, Disability and Sexuality, Disability and Hidden Impairment.
Resources for these are on the website: www.ukdhm.org
