A MUSEUM dedicated to the history of London’s waterways celebrated its birthday this week with ice-cream making, free boat trips and cake.
London Canal Museum in New Wharf Road, King’s Cross, marked its 30th year on Wednesday, suspending the ticket price and welcoming visitors in for a programme of talks.
The museum, which opened in 1992, is home to an eclectic range of exhibitions and shows, from a restored dutch barge to a traditional ice house where ice imported from Norway used to be stored before the advent of the refrigerator.
With only two paid staff on the books, the venue runs with the help of a large roster of volunteers – although the museum’s chair, Martin Sach, has said he is always looking for more canal enthusiasts to help out.
The evening party served as a “thank you” to these volunteers, also making up for the Christmas party that had to be cancelled because of Covid restrictions.
