Will a Tory victory bring back pay-to-stay tenant tax?

Friday, 28th April 2017

• IF Tories are re-elected, don’t be surprised if pay-to-stay tenant tax, based on a family’s gross income of more than £40,000 a year, is imposed on all tenants, as this nasty legislation is still on the statute books.

The threshold where you start paying this might even be lowered or you could be expected to pay 80 per cent of the market rate.

They could even decide to override any council and bring in regeneration of every council and housing association home. Why put yourselves at the mercy of a government that does not see tenants/leaseholders as a primary concern? Often tenants are irrelevant.

The Labour Party has pledged to build 500,000 new council homes, end the sale of council homes, bring back regulations and do more to ensure all social housing is for the benefit of tenants.

Private tenants would have rent controls and much longer and fairer contracts. Labour would bring much more security to tenants’ lives. Work out which one is better for you: Labour or Tory?
