People with disabilities will not be disadvantaged by road closures
Friday, 25th September 2020
• ONCE again the protesters against Islington road closures are claiming that the changes “will put disabled people at a disadvantage”, (Tribune, September 11).
I am mainly house-bound, being severely disabled because of ataxia, and live very close to the hitherto very busy Thornhill Road in Barnsbury.
Only since the start of the coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic, and the consequent reduction in heavy through-traffic, have I been able to go outside free of fear.
The argument that I and other disabled people will be disadvantaged by road closures is not merely specious, it’s a wicked lie.
Those various commercial interests which are negatively affected by road closures should, of course, have their say. But they should also be transparent about saying precisely who they are.
And they should not have the effrontery to claim they are speaking up for people with disabilities.
